Itinerary

Although, you can easily make this into a full-day trip, this is a great option for a half-day trip, offering just the right balance of adventure and relaxation. We had a lunch spot planned back in the city, so the drive and morning hike fit perfectly into our schedule. This itinerary includes a route map, the trail map we used, and other points of interest to consider if you’re in the area.

Things to Know

Timing – Early Morning

This is a popular destination, so we recommend going as early as possible. Arrive later than noon, and you might find yourself stuck in traffic at the entrance kiosk. If you’re planning to photograph the Fire Wave, the late afternoon and early evening light is ideal.

Weather Fall & Winter
We did this trip in late December, and the weather was spot on—cloudy in some spots. This area is definitely best enjoyed during the cooler months of the year. In the summer, temperatures soar well over 100°F, and the trail has zero shade.

Safety & Essentials

  • Bring plenty of water and wear sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses).
  • Sturdy shoes are a must for hiking, and keep an eye out for wildlife.
  • If hiking in summer, start early to avoid the heat.

Accessibility Information

Some visitors may be concerned with accessibility, so adding a note on which trails are more accessible or if there are any ADA-compliant features at picnic areas or restrooms could be helpful.
